While it was just a matter of time, YouTube Music is now the official music app for Android, rather than Google Play Music.

Google says YouTube Music is going to be pre-installed on all new Android smartphones shipping with Android 10 and Android 9 Pie.

It's almost obvious, but this is yet another step towards Google Play Music's imminent demise.

For a while, the writing was on the wall. For example, in April, Google shut down the Artist Hub app, which allowed independent artists to upload their music on Google Play Music for streaming.

Google said the closure was due to YouTube Music in the company's email to artists and continued to encourage them to become YouTube Artists.

Still, it's a tough pill to swallow if you're fond of Google Play Music. While in recent months, YouTube Music has improved, it is still not as robust as Google Play Music.

For example, Google only added a Discover Weekly-like feature to YouTube Music earlier this week. Like its messaging apps, it would be nice if Google picked and stuck with a music app and it seems like you're doing it with YouTube Music, at least for now.
