Leica's recent special-edition camera seems to belong to a rock legend's hands — likely because one made it. Andy Summers, former guitarist for The Police, designed the Leica M Monochrom Signature camera. Also inspired by Fender's Signature Guitar, the camera will quickly have to match a six-string.
The special edition mixes the same technical specifications with a Leica Summicron-Mf/2 35 mm ASPH lens as the standard black-and-white mirrorless camera, but adapts a fresh view to the outside. The leatherette wrap displays several images of Summer from all over the globe combined in a collage around each other. The red engraving of Summers ' signature also pays tribute to the guitar at the top of the camera.
The Fender guitar will house the same collage of images, while also receiving layout indications from the camera, including inspiration from some of the controls of the silver camera. The camera will be combined with a lens, vintage lens hood, a Fender-inspired camera strap, and a leather camera bag from Oberwerth. Only 50 sets are accessible globally as a unique edition.
Known as a guitarist, the recent album from Summers, Triboluminescence, also involves his job on bass drums, guitar, and keyboards. While Summers is best known for his songs, he is also a 36-year-old Leica photographer, including some videos.
The guitar and camera collage utilizes a photograph of a person riding his horse in the ocean, people sheltering in China from rain under hoods, and a balloon photograph at one of his shows. Summers showed:
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to have the opportunity to work with two leading producers of two fundamental instruments I hold close to my heart, Leica Camera and Fender. I’ve always thought of my photographic experience as tearing pages from a book and then reshuffling the results into a new visual syntax, and the collage-forward design of the Leica M Monochrom Signature is the physical embodiment of just that.”
The limited availability raises the setup price point to $15,000 as a special-edition camera. Leica shops and boutiques offer the camera.
